Lets lay the cards on the table on this one, I am not a Brit hater or a Protestant hater – but I am sure I'll offend some reading this with some of my views on the 'whole' thing. If you don't like it then you don't have to read it but if you want to learn about a Catholic from Derry op ions on things then read on, you never know you might learn something.

I was born in the late 70's so I was lucky to miss the worst part of the troubles back in the late 60's or early 70's when Catholics in Derry had very little civil rights even though they were the majority religion in the city, but that shouldn't matter right? Equality and all that?

So back in the early days Catholics just wanted their civil rights, rights to vote and the right to have a say in the politics so when they started holding marches to protest this is when things took a turn for the worse. On occussions peaceful civilians would be attacked by police, the British Army and loyalist mobs when taking part in these marches. My own mother and father had attend some of these and witnesses first hand the savage beatings people had taken. Irish & British relations grew sour very fast and the British establishment stayed very stubborn through all the trouble. Then came the worst day in Derry's history and changed the history of the Northern Ireland troubles forever.

On January 30th, 1972 the 1st Parachute regiment of the British Army opened fire on an un-armed civilian crowd attending a Civil Rights March, killing 14 people in all. It was a disgusting act from the British and I don't think the stupid idiots realized what the out-come would be. But of course they claim that they were fired apon first by the I.R.A and that bombs were thrown at them, over hundreds of eye-witness accounts deny this – including my own mother and fathers. That night hundreds of young lads, angered by the murders, decided the people of Derry can take no more and so they joined the I.R.A.

I know relations of the people that was killed that day, you have to know that Derry has always been a very close community even with a population of over 125,000, and until this day it has ripped the souls out of each one of the family members and many of the people within Derry. Justice still has not been served on the soldiers that carried out the murders and there probably be never anyone brought to justice. I think the best we will get from the British GOV is whoops that shouldn't have happened, no apology from the Queen?
I highly recommend watching the film “Bloody Sunday”, its a very accurate account of what happened.
